How Colorado seniors afford aging-in-place remodels.

Request a Colorado CAPS referral →

Eight federal and Colorado state and county programs that pay for, subsidize, or scope the in-home support side of an aging-in-place remodel — the USDA Section 504 rural Colorado row, the VA HISA grant, the CDHS Aging & Adult Services benefits-navigation line, the Colorado AAA HCBS waiver, the Colorado Energy Office LIHEAP / Weatherization Assistance Program, the Denver / Boulder / El Paso county AAA home-modification mini-grants, and the Colorado senior / disabled property-tax exemption. Plain-English eligibility, an Apply CTA per program, and a CAPS-pro routing surface at the foot of the page.

The list

No programs, plain-English eligibility.

The Colorado seed of the Greybough senior-funding index: two federal programs that apply to every state, two Colorado state-level lines (CDHS benefits-navigation and the senior / disabled property-tax exemption), one Colorado aging-services waiver, and three Colorado-county-level notes (the Energy Office LIHEAP / WAP envelope and the Denver / Boulder / El Paso AAA mini-grant lines). The county lines sit last because they are the most-missed line items on an aging-in-place remodel budget — and the most-often mis-quoted by a contractor.

Check programs for your ZIP.

Type any US ZIP and see the federal programs that apply everywhere, then the state-specific programs the editor has vetted for your state. Colorado ZIPs return the CDHS Aging & Adult Services row, the Colorado AAA HCBS waiver, the Colorado Energy Office LIHEAP / WAP row, the Front Range AAA mini-grant lines, and the senior / disabled property-tax exemption automatically — anything else you need routes to the editor inbox below so the next state gets seeded.

County and regional assistance

Find the aging-services agency for the home’s county

Start with the county where the home is located, plus its ZIP code. Use the official Colorado Area Agencies on Aging directory to find the agency serving that county. If you only know the ZIP or the county boundary is unclear, confirm the county for the property address first; ask the state contact for help if the directory does not give you a clear match.

Confirm local rules before counting on help

Federal programs set national rules, and statewide Colorado programs describe their state-level rules. Services and funds delivered through a county, Area Agency on Aging (AAA), or provider are administered locally. Use the directory only to route; the agency or provider serving the home must confirm service area, eligibility, current funding, capacity, eligible work, application steps, and any written pre-approval before work is committed. Local services and funds differ, so statewide or federal coverage does not mean every county is served, and assistance is never guaranteed.

  • Does your service area include the home’s county and ZIP code?
  • Does the household meet this program’s eligibility rules, and is funding currently available?
  • Is the program accepting applications, or is there a waitlist or capacity limit?
  • Which home modifications or other work are eligible, and must a provider or estimate be approved?
  • What are the application steps and required documents, and must written pre-approval arrive before signing a contract or starting work?

The grants index is editor-vetted, not algorithm-ranked. If a Colorado, federal, or county program paying for aging-in-place remodels is missing here, the editor wants to know — short note, three fields, auto-routed to the grant-routing inbox. The submitted message also lands on the team-wide lead log so a reviewer can scope the follow-up.
